More than 2,000 passengers a day will soon benefit from faster, more reliable train services in Melbourne’s west, with works officially starting on the Kororoit Creek Road level crossing removal and the partial duplication of the Altona loop.

Member for Williamstown Wade Noonan today visited the site to turn the first sod, as crews prepare to clear top soil, establish fencing and barriers, and relocate underground utilities close to the level crossing in coming weeks.

Removing the dangerous Kororoit Creek Road crossing will improve safety and traffic flow in the area.

Partially duplicating the Altona loop will finally allow trains to pass each other, improving reliability of services and reducing the likelihood of trains bypassing the loop altogether.

The project is creating around 300 jobs, with at least one in three workers being women from a variety of technical and safety backgrounds. Work will be complete by the end of 2018.

To enable these works, the Altona loop will be closed from 8:15pm on Friday, 1 September, until the first service on Monday, 4 September. Buses will replace trains during this time.

This month will also see 37 daily services that currently stop at Newport extended further down the line as part of a new metropolitan timetable.

Nineteen trains that currently originate at Newport will run from Altona to Flinders Street, while 18 services from Laverton will be extended to the city, stopping all stations.

This will remove the last of the shuttle services introduced by the former Liberal Government, which forced passengers to transfer at Newport to get to the city, and to get back home at the end of the day.
